Can I enable the screen reader when setting up my new phone?

To turn on the screen reader when setting up your Android device for the very first time, follow these steps:

  • For Android version 4.1 and later: Press and hold two fingers on the setup screen. The TalkBack feature will be enabled and a tutorial will begin when this gesture is recognized by your device.
  • For Android version 4.0: Use your finger to draw a closed rectangle on the setup screen. The TalkBack feature will be enabled and you will hear a beep when this gesture is recognized by your phone.

Note: We recommend keeping headphones handy, to plug them in when it's time to enter any passwords, such as your Wi-Fi® password. By default, key echo (repeating out loud each key after it is tapped) will only work when headphones are plugged into your device. To change this setting later, locate and tap "Accessibility" in your Settings.
