What do I do if my device battery drains quickly?

The battery life of your device depends on several factors, including how it's used, its settings, and which features are enabled. Battery life can also be affected by whether or not there is damage to the device or battery, as well was whether or not the device's software is up to date.

The following steps will reduce quick battery drain and improve battery life:

Try restarting your device.

If you are not using the original charger that came with the device (OEM accessories), try using the original included charger.

Please check the battery usage to find the cause of quick battery drain. To check your battery usage, use the following steps:

    1. Tap the "Settings" app.
    2. Tap "Battery." If necessary, tap "Battery usage" a list will be displayed with percentages of which applications and functions are using the device's battery.

Check your display settings:

    • General
      • The device display will usually be at the top of the battery usage list because it takes a lot of energy to power the display.
    • Brightness
      • The brightness of the display has the largest impact on the battery life of your device. The brighter the display, the more quickly the battery will drain.
    • Timeout
      • The screen timeout is the amount of time it takes before your device will automatically turn off the display after you have stopped interacting with it. A long timeout delay will cause the battery to drain quickly.
      • Try reducing the display brightness and timeout delay in order to extend your battery life.

Check which features are enabled.

  • Wi-Fi, GPS, and Bluetooth - The battery will drain more quickly when these features are enabled. These features use additional radio waves in the device, which draw additional power.
  • Sync - The frequency of your sync settings can impact battery usage. To resolve battery issues related to enabled features, try turning these features off when they are not in use.
  • Review your device's applications:
    • 3rd party applications that claim to extend battery life or improve performance are generally bad for your device. Google has developed Android to manage memory and battery usage by default. There is no need to duplicate these features with a 3rd party application.
    • Social Media apps - Social Media applications may be using up to 10% to 20% of your device's battery. These types of applications check for news and updates on a regular basis causing significant battery drain.
    • Games - Games may use a lot of battery if they are graphically intense or they require many calculations.
    • Media - Using audio and video media applications, especially streaming applications, can use a lot of battery power.
    • To resolve battery issues related to applications, try running the device in Safe Mode, uninstalling the applications, using the application in moderation, or disabling application background data.

Check your device's signal:

    • If you are in an area where you have a poor signal, the cellular radio in your device will run at full power in an attempt to get a better signal. This can cause significant battery drain. Try turning Airplane Mode on when you are not actively using your device.
    • Connect to Wi-Fi when available.
    • Return to an area where you have better signal strength.

Be aware of the device's environment.

    • Extreme temperatures, such as a hot car or near a source of heat, can cause damage to the battery.
    • Extreme low humidity can produce static electricity, which can damage your battery. Extreme high humidity can cause corrosion and potentially short the battery.

Check the battery's condition.

  • If there is physical or liquid damage, then you will need to contact the manufacturer for service.
  • The age of your battery can also affect how long it lasts. Cell phone batteries are powered by chemical reactions. As a result, they have a limited number of lifetime charging cycles and performance will decrease over time.
  • To resolve battery issues related to its condition:
    • Avoid completely draining the battery to 0%.
    • Charge the device once the battery charge level reaches 5% or below.
    • Avoid using the device while charging and wait until the battery charge level reaches 100%.
    • Try another battery in the device (if available and battery is removable).
    • Purchase a new battery.

Update your device software, if updates are available.

Wipe the cache partition.

Perform a Factory Data Reset.
