What should I do if my iPhone shuts down on its own OR the battery unexpectedly dies?

The battery life of your iPhone depends on several factors, including how it's used, its settings, and which features are enabled. Battery life can also be affected by whether or not there is damage to the iPhone or battery, as well was whether or not the iPhone's software is up to date. Follow the recommendations below to alleviate the issue:


Do you receive a low power warning before the device shuts down?

No - Proceed to Battery Replacement at the bottom of this article.


Battery Saving Suggestions


Turn on Low Power Mode
Low Power Mode turns off many of the nonessential functions of your phone known to consume extra power.

  1. From the main screen, tap the "Settings" icon.
  2. Tap "Battery."
  3. Tap the slider to turn "Low Power Mode" ON.

You can also scroll down on this screen to see which apps are taxing your battery. Reduce use of those apps or follow recommendations on this screen. Is an app making heavy use of Background Refresh?


Turn off Background App Refresh for Select Apps
Background App Refresh allows applications to use data and battery power to keep up to date while you are not actively using them.

  1. From the main screen, tap the "Settings" icon.
  2. Locate and tap the apps you would like to adjust.
  3. Tap the slider next to "Background App Refresh" to turn it OFF.


Turn off Location Services (GPS)
GPS location services can consume a lot of power. If you are not using GPS you can turn it off to extend your battery life. Please note you will to need to turn this setting back on to use GPS Maps navigation or other location services.

  1. From the main screen, tap the "Settings" icon.
  2. Locate and tap "Privacy".
  3. Tap "Location Services".
  4. Tap the slider to turn "Location Services" OFF.


Battery Replacement

If you continue to have trouble with your battery life after trying these suggestions you should contact Apple for Battery Replacement service.


If your phone shuts down without warning, or if your battery life has become unacceptable you will need to arrange for battery replacement service through Apple. Learn more on how to arrange services through Apple for your iPhone. If your phone is less than a year old, this may be covered by your warranty. Exact details will vary, but most repairs cost $79 and take 3–5 days.
