Your iPhone may freeze or stop responding for a number of reasons. Your iPhone can often be fixed by restarting your iPhone.
Is your touchscreen unresponsive right now?
Yes - Restart your phone:
- iPhone models without a HOME button: Press and hold the POWER and VOLUME DOWN keys simultaneously for 10–15 seconds, or until the device turns off completely.
iPhone models with a HOME button: Press and hold the POWER and HOME keys simultaneously for 10–15 seconds, or until the device turns off completely. - Wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the POWER key again for 5 seconds or until the device turns back on. Swipe right to unlock the screen.
No - If your phone frequently freezes, we recommend that you back up and reset your phone to factory settings. See instructions at the bottom of this article.
Is your device still unresponsive?
Yes -You will need to perform a hard reset to your iPhone. This will erase all the data stored on your phone. Before you begin, make sure that your computer has the most recent version of iTunes installed. Connect your iPhone to your computer using the charger/USB cable that came with your device.
- iPhone models without a HOME button:
- To begin the reset process, quickly press and release the VOLUME UP button. Then, quickly press and release the VOLUME DOWN button.
- Press and hold the PWR/LOCK button until the Apple logo is displayed on your screen. Your device will be reset.
- Click "OK" and wait for iTunes to complete the restoration.
- iPhone models with a HOME button:
- Press and hold the POWER and HOME keys simultaneously for 10–15 seconds, or until the device turns off.
- Wait 30 seconds, then press and hold the POWER key for 5 seconds or until the device turns back on, then press and hold the POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 seconds.
- Release the POWER button while continuing to hold down the VOLUME DOWN button. When you receive a notification from iTunes on your computer screen, release the VOLUME DOWN button.
- To continue, click "OK" and wait for iTunes to complete the restoration.

- Tap "General."
- Tap "Transfer or Reset iPhone."

- Tap "Erase All Content and Settings," and follow the prompts on your device.
- Note: If you don't see the option for "Backup then Erase" or "Erase All Content and Settings," then we recommend you manually back up your device before tapping "Erase."
