Can I use Messaging and Mail without having to type on the keyboard?

If you have difficulty typing on the virtual keyboard, you can use your voice to dictate your texts and emails. To use dictation, begin by opening the desired app and enabling the keyboard. Select the "Microphone" key and begin speaking. When finished, simply stop speaking and select the "Keyboard" key. The text will be displayed on the screen as you speak, and a blue line will appear under any words that dictation is unsure it understood correctly.

  • To correct a single word, select the underlined word and select the correct spelling option. If the word needs to be replaced, quickly tap it twice and select the "Microphone" key. Say the correct word, then select the "Keyboard" key.
  • To replace an entire section of text, select what you would like to change and select the "Microphone" key. Speak again, then select the "Keyboard" key when finished.
  • If you would like to add additional text, select the screen where you would like the text to be inserted and select the "Microphone" key. Speak again, then select the "Keyboard" key when finished.
  • To switch to another language for dictation, long-press the "Microphone" key and select the desired language.

To add punctuation to your dictation, simply say the type of punctuation you would like to insert as you speak. For example, when dictating a text message, saying "Hi George exclamation mark" will appear as "Hi George!" in the text message field.

Common formatting and punctuation commands you can use during dictation include the following:

  • Quote/end quote: begin and end a quote
  • New paragraph: start a new paragraph
  • New line: begin a new line
  • Cap: capitalize the next word
  • Caps on/caps off: capitalize the first character of each word
