What is VoiceOver? How do I set it up?

VoiceOver is a gesture-based screen reader that allows you to use your iPhone without seeing the screen. It gives audible descriptions of whatever is currently displayed, including battery level, which app your finger is on, and the name of the Contact calling you.

To interact with the screen, you will need to learn and use a variety of VoiceOver gestures. Please note that these gestures will replace the default gestures used to control you iPhone.

When you move on to a new screen, VoiceOver plays a sound, then selects and speaks the name of the first item on the screen (usually located at the top-left corner of your screen). VoiceOver will also tell you when the display rotates to landscape or portrait orientation, when the screen dims and locks, and what is active on the Lock screen when you wake your iPhone.

To enable VoiceOver, use any of the following methods:

  1. From the main screen, tap the "Settings" icon.
  2. Locate and tap "Accessibility."
  3. Tap "VoiceOver." Then, tap the slider at the top of the screen.
  4. Access Siri and say "Turn on VoiceOver."
  5. Quickly press and release the PWR/LOCK key 3 times in a row on an iPhone that features Face ID.
  6. Quickly press and release the HOME key 3 times in a row on an iPhone that features Touch ID.
  7. Access the Control Center and select the "Accessibility" icon.
