What is a screen reader? How do I use it to navigate my phone?

Screen readers, which are used to convert the text displayed on your screen into speech, are useful for blind or visually-impaired users, as well as those with certain types of cognitive or learning disabilities.

To enable the screen reader feature on your phone, press and hold both the Volume UP and Volume DOWN keys for at least 3 seconds. If the feature does not turn on right away, try pressing the keys again for at least 3 seconds.

  • Note: If necessary, follow the prompts on your screen to confirm.

If you are unable to turn this feature on using the Volume keys, follow these steps:

  1. From the main screen, slide the screen up to display your apps.
  2. Locate and tap the "Settings" icon.
  3. Locate and tap "Accessibility."
  4. Tap "TalkBack" or "Screen reader."
  5. Tap "Use Talkback" or "Voice Assistant" to toggle the slider ON.
    • Note: If prompted to allow the feature to control your phone, tap "Allow" to continue. You may need to quickly tap "Allow" twice in order to continue.
  6. If necessary, tap "OK."
